Night of the Radishes

Every year on December 23rd, the people of Oaxaca City, Mexico celebrate the Night of the Radishes. The contest began back in 1897 to help promote local agriculture and highlight the radish, an essential element of Oaxacan cuisine, especially at Christmastime. For a few brief hours, hundreds of intricately carved radishes are displayed and judged before the delicate creations begin to wilt and fade.
