Health Precautions: For the safety of all Gishers, and in light of the most recent variants of COVID-19 and other diseases, all local and regional COVID-19 and health restrictions must be strictly observed — including, but not limited to, wearing a mask while around others, social distancing, and frequent hand washing. Be safe, and do not risk endangering yourself or others in your pursuit of GISH. We take this seriously, and ask that you do, too. Keep each other safe.

Consent: We’re trying to shake up social norms, but we also want to be respectful of others. Please obtain the consent of anyone appearing in your photos or videos in a recognizable way.

A Brief Acknowledgment: With over 10 years of GISH on the books, I want to thank everyone who helped me with the List this year and supported our strange little game, including Philip, Chris, Mon, Charlie, Giles, Dave Lavery, Tracy, Riley, Kristin, my mom, all the Gishers… and anyone else who contributed multiple items but has requested anonymity. GISH, and all the good we do together, only exists because of all of you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

ZOOM PANEL #4. TUESDAY AUGUST 2 AT 11:00AM PT (Pacific Time): Fraser Cain, Universe Today

Watch the Zoom Panel here!

Zoom Challenge: Fraser Cain from Universe Today described why space exploration is critical for the progress of humanity, but it’s a big universe and we’re going to need a lot of help, so it’s time to get machines in on the creativity. Build a Von Neumann probe: a self-replicating robot or device capable of making a new version of itself. Is a 3-D printerbot, printing a new 3-D printerbot? Is it a knitted knittingbot, knitting another knittingbot? A dancerbot that makes its own backup dancerbots? Show us your most creative Von Neumann probe. Be sure to show us that it can be turned off — we don’t want a Reaper situation on our hands! Post your videos on social media, tagging @fcain, @universetoday and #GISH.

ZOOM PANEL #6: WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3 AT 12:00PM PT (Pacific Time): Laura Jack, Compassion Academy

Watch the Zoom panel here!

Zoom Challenge: Laura Jack described how everyone has struggles that they often hide from public view. Make a reusable, portable sign (such as a chalkboard, whiteboard, or letter board) that says “I am struggling with ______________” OR “The truth is, I feel ______________” and get someone to fill in the blank with something that has been challenging them. Take a photo of them holding the sign and posing in the most happy, beautiful, carefree pose they can. Post your image on Instagram, tagging #GISH and @laurajackcoaching. Make sure you have their permission to post their photo! Laura would love for people to read pages 7-9 from the Compassion Code Starter Guide before attempting the challenge so they can be kind and thoughtful about their approach.

ZOOM PANEL #7: THURSDAY AUGUST 4 AT 3:00PM PT (Pacific Time): Jeremy Abbott, Librarian/Lawyer, researcher of public spaces & access

Watch the Zoom panel here!

Zoom Challenge: Too many public spaces aren’t really public at all — demographic or socioeconomic barriers limit accessibility of some public spaces and facilities in discriminatory ways. Let’s do something about it: Find something in your neighborhood that is supposedly public but not truly accessible to all — like park benches with those annoying bars so you can’t lie down on them which makes them inaccessible to people experiencing homelessness. Find a way to resolve these secret barriers to entry or write a letter to city hall asking them to fix it. Post your solution on social media and tag @librarianjer (on Twitter only) and #GISH.

I was just… like…. lonely, yeah [….] I didn’t know how to be me because I didn’t know who I was.” Using a minimum of 50 dominoes, blocks, books or other ‘topple-able’ building materials, create and topple a word or a design that represents something unique to who you are. Record it as it topples and post it on Instagram, tagging @Hevesh5 and #GISH.

16I often make other people get tattoos, but this year I’m flipping the script and making you help me get one: Design a pointillism-style tattoo for my shoulder that incorporates a baby cheetah, a sockeye salmon and the words “wild and precious life” or something similar. The baby cheetah represents my son; the sockeye salmon, my daughter… and the phrase has deep meaning to me. I intend to use a mashup of the designs I like best, so give it all you’ve got. (Then, if you are so inclined, get a pointillist tattoo of three things that have deep significance to you — but you don’t have to do this part to get your Points.)

Get creative with the design to entice others to cross through. An otherworldly-looking sign that says, “GISH TRANSCENDENCE PORTAL” should be on both sides of the door along with instructions: “Step 1. Think of something you want to change or transcend. Step 2. As you cross over the threshold, hold that new reality in your heart. Step 3. Post a photo of yourself (on the other side of the door) on social media with hashtag #GISH.” Submit a photo of your doorway and include a comment with its address location. Then, add your Portal address here to have it added to the GISH Portal Network. Also, put it in our GISH Bunker Facebook group so other teams can visit!

CHANGE A LIFE: Ukraine Every year, the GISH community unites to “Change A Life”making a profound difference in the lives of people facing extraordinary hardship. In the past, we’ve gathered our community to help Syrian refugees rebuild their lives, support a courageous team of women working to clear unexploded bombs from villages in Laos, and assist a farming co-operative of Rwandan genocide survivors working to feed their families — among the many other vital efforts the GISH community has helped to mobilize around people working to overcome tremendous adversity.

GISH Ambassador, photographer, and humanitarian Giles Duley has introduced many of these people to us through his Legacy of War Foundation. Despite losing his legs and one arm in an IED explosion a decade ago, Giles travels to the most remote regions of the world to share the stories of people thrust into unimaginable hardship, all in hopes that we can support their quest to build better lives.

In the chaos of conflict, marginalized people are among the most vulnerable; they are often left behind and suffer unimaginable hardship due to the ravages of war. Nowhere is this more true than the war zones of Ukraine. This year, Giles has been speaking to activists and organizations risking their lives to ensure the safety of people otherwise left unsupported by big aid agencies — people who have been left behind to fend for themselves in the direst of circumstance

Not on our watch.

YOUR MISSION. In partnership with Legacy of War Foundation and Random Acts, we’re setting a goal of raising $100,000 to assist LGBTQIA+ Ukrainians and Ukrainians with disabilities.

WHAT TO DO: Create a fundraiser page here and get at least 10 donations of a minimum of $10. WE ARE NOT ASKING YOU OR YOUR TEAMMATES TO DONATE. Rather, we ask that you reach out to the global community and your social networks to make a contribution. Then, submit a screenshot of your fundraiser showing 10 donations and the total amount donated to us for your points.

WHAT YOUR DONATIONS DO: Your donations will fund Legacy of War Foundation’s work essential support to marginalized Ukrainians who have been displaced due to the effects of war. We are setting an initial goal of raising $100,000 for Legacy of War Foundation’s Ukraine Crisis Response (in partnership with Random Acts). This will enable us to fully fund two critical projects:

  1. We will be funding a year-long “disability hub” in Ukraine to supply specialized wheelchairs and equipment. Many people with disabilities were focused to evacuate without vital supplies, and this is not merely impractical or uncomfortable: lacking the correct medical equipment or mobility aids can have a serious impact on health and wellbeing. These funds will enable us to get critical equipment at cost and, utilizing our network of volunteers and partner organizations, distribute the equipment where it is needed most.
  2. We will also be funding two shelters in Lviv, Ukraine — one for women, and one for LGBTQIA+ individuals. These marginalized groups are at particular risk in Ukraine as Russia overtakes their towns and their homes. We will be working with Women’s March and Insight, two reputable organizations with a long history of supporting these groups in Ukraine. LGBTQIA+ individuals’ lives are at particular risk as Russia invades due to their draconian stance on LGBTQIA+ rights, so the need for this help could not be more urgent. With your help, we’ll be able to provide shelter and support to 250 vulnerable Ukrainians for six entire months through these two shelters.

Please help us reach this important initial goal so we can ensure that no one is forgotten or left without the support they need to survive this brutal war.

DONATIONS ARE 100% TAX-DEDUCTIBLE. (For countries other than the U.S., deductions are contingent on your laws). 90% of the donations will benefit the Change-A-Life efforts with 10% to Random Acts’ General Fund to further support random acts of kindness, like these, all over the world.

34(TIMELAPSE) Speaking of the Amazon, this year’s GISH winners will go on a trip of a lifetime to the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest where they’ll explore the biodiverse lands and meet the Indigenous peoples fighting oil companies who are destroying their ancestral land. The Amazon is home to not only these humans but also to more species of plants and animals than any other terrestrial ecosystem on the planet, with thousands of species of flora and fauna and new ones discovered every day. We need to protect it — especially from oil extraction! Create a timelapse video of a scratchboard art piece creation that “reveals” the colorful and biodiverse Amazonian scene that exists, but only when we remove toxic black sludge from the picture. Make sure to include a message to the oil companies about their irresponsible pillaging of this fertile land. Post your video and tag #GISH, @AmazonWatch, and @Chevron, @BP, @Shell, @FronteraEnergy, or any other fossil fuel corporations that have a history of harming the Amazon.

38Every string quartet usually has one musician per instrument — but here at GISHCorp, we’re job creators who encourage collaboration. Play “A Little Help from My Friends” by the Beatles on four traditional stringed instruments, but each instrument must be played simultaneously by at LEAST three musicians— two doing bow work or pizzicato on the same instrument while another does the fingering — for a dodecatet at minimum. Bonus points for the team with the most people playing a single instrument at once.

39In a real museum, exhibit an “artifact” belonging to an elderly person over 70 that they remember fondly from their childhood. Use the actual item. It should be accompanied by a didactic listing the name of the item, the approximate period it is from, the materials that it is made from, and a short explanation of the donor/inspiration and its meaning. Then, if possible and safe to do so, bring the person to the museum to see their memory on display. – Amy M.

40COLLABORATIVE. The GISH Book Club is playing a game of hide-and-go-read! Leave a copy of a book you love in your neighborhood and post a clue in the GISH Bunker, GISH App, or social media to help people find it. Then, go find another team’s book. Submit the picture of you with the book you hid and the one you found, side-by-side, and include the name of the team whose book you found.

(UP TO 60 SECONDS) Everybody Chill… ash!? Turn out that x in axolotl, a Nahuatl word, is pronounced a little differently than our mascot’s name. Nahuatl is an endangered Indigenous language, and we believe Indigenous languages should be respected and preserved. We also recognize that Gishers are not a monolith — our global community represents many diverse cultures and ancestries. So for this Item, pick the choice that is appropriate:

1. If you are Indigenous and you (or loved one) speak an endangered or vulnerable Indigenous language, create a video sharing a short story, song, or phrase you know in your language. (Please caption it in English so we may learn from you.)

2. If you are not Indigenous or prefer not to focus on your own ancestry, go to the Endangered Languages Project map and locate an Indigenous language near you that is vulnerable or endangered. Listen to it and learn about it. Then, create a beautiful, handmade infographic about it to share what you learned about this precious language. Post it online and tag #GISH. – Inspired by Rat M.

But there’s one thing I know you can find, so I’m sending you on another wild-goose chase: Long before Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You, several poetry anthologies, and The Adventurous Eaters Club, I was a published illustrator! My artwork was published in an award-winning book when I was 12 years old. What did I draw? Find the real book and take a selfie with one of the two illustrations I made in it. (I drew a robin and a unicorn.) Your clue: The author is from a town near my hometown, and she possesses a magic penny.

54(TIMELAPSE – UP TO 30 SECONDS) Managing work-life balance is rough, but you never slack off on keeping it all on the level: Walk a slackline while balancing office equipment, files, phones, and other “work” accouterments in one arm and in the other, things from your personal life — hobbies, supplies to complete chores, pets or children (or photos are fine)… It does not have to be high off the ground, but you must make it across the entire slackline.

A lot of people know that Random Acts, the charity I founded, does some pretty big projects. We have built a free high school in Nicaragua, a children’s center for orphans in Haiti and RA has helped facilitate many of the big, charitable projects that GISH raises money for — but many people don’t know that Random Acts also funds hundreds of micro acts year-in and year-out that are carried out by helpers like you in communities around the world.

This week, Random Acts has kicked off “1,000 Little Acts of Kindness (with big impact)“, a challenge to help supporters complete 1,000 Acts of Kindness before the end of August. So we’re inviting Gishers to help support the campaign… and Random Acts may fund your local act up to $50USD!

YOUR ITEM: Identify a person or group that is in your community that you can help through a small act of kindness. It can be a person, group, school, animal, or even an organization. There are some rules — for instance, it can’t be paying a bill for someone and it can’t be an act for a family member. All the guidelines are on the Random Acts website here. Go to the Random Acts website, make sure your Act qualifies and fill out the 1,000 Little Acts of Kindness Acts Proposal.
Random Acts staff will review your Act and, on approval, will give you/your team up to $50USD to implement your vision. The monies will be distributed via PayPal only, which is widely available in most countries. (If you’re in a country such as Pakistan that doesn’t have PayPal access and you want to request funding to complete your Act, it’s up to you to coordinate with your teammates to get that transfer worked out.)

IMPORTANT NOTES: Your Act does NOT have to use money to qualify for Points — you can do an Act that is free, but you still have to submit an Acts Proposal and complete an Act to get your Points. If your Act isn’t approved by Random Acts, you can still do any act of kindness in your community (with or without spending money) to qualify for GISH Points — however, we must see that your team has submitted an Act Proposal and completed an Act of Kindness in your community to get Points for this Item. If your Act is approved and funds are sent to you, you are required to follow through with your proposal and submit receipts and evidence (images, videos) to Random Acts as part of your official Random Act. Any money distributed to you that is not used to fulfill the Act must be returned to Random Acts along with all receipts. Post evidence of your Random Act of Kindness on social media and tag #GISH, @RandomActsOrg and #1KActsRA.

SUBMIT TO GISH: Submit side-by-side images of your Act Proposal form and evidence of your act, or if it’s something that you can capture in video format, compile them into a video showcasing your act of kindness and include a link to your social media post in comments. PS: While you can certainly apply for a fully-funded act and I encourage you to do so after the Hunt, please wait until after the 1,000 Little Acts program has ended so the Random Acts team isn’t overwhelmed with requests. Thanks..

158People with disabilities have changed the world in so many meaningful ways. Tomorrow is the last day of Disability Pride month, so let’s celebrate all the historic champions of our world who happen to have a disability! Create a portrait of a person who made a positive contribution to the world and who was disabled using something that is symbolic of their contribution: such as a portrait of Maya Angelou out of lines of her poems, Beethoven out of music notes, an audio portrait/song about Stevie Wonder using lines of his songs, Alan Turing out of lines of code… you get the idea. Get creative with your representation Post on social media and tag #GISH & #DisabilityPride. – inspired by Rachel Miner and Katya O.

161TV shows get crossover episodes all the time, but we just don’t see enough Poetry Crossovers! Choose two of your favorite short, well-known poems from wildly different genres of poets and write the words on separate slips of paper. Then, rearrange the words to form a brand-new poem that creates the genre mash-up the poetry world has been yearning for. You must use all the primary words in your new creation, but you can add or remove conjunctions and articles as needed to make it flow.

168WELCOME TO THE KIDS MENU. I know that having small Hunters is a joy and sometimes a challenge as you tackle the Item List, so the below List is full of things that little kids can do. It should help you keep them occupied without making too big a mess. Anyone can do these Items, which have been created with the youngest Honorary Gishers in mind. But the goal of them is to have fun participating and they will be judged based on participation, not necessarily result. Each Item is worth no more than 10 points, so they won’t make or break any team’s chances of winning, but they will give kids and kids-at-heart a chance to be involved. Enjoy!

188Sadly, we just learned about the passing of Nichelle Nichols — a trailblazer and one of the first Black women featured in a major television series (as Star Trek bridge officer Uhura). Nichols was a champion for equality. She partnered with NASA to create “Women in Motion,” a program on a mission to hire people of color and the first female astronauts for the space agency. Let’s honor her memory: take a long-exposure photo at night of a “woman in motion” with a star-filled sky behind her.

It’s written in the stars…

The Puzzle Item Task: Assemble your constellation: Identify the people in your life who are part of your network of mutual aid and support (you know, the people, groups, and community groups who would always raise their voices to support you — and you, them). Create a “constellation” mapping each of these beacons of light in your universe, with you in the center and your biggest mutual advocates as the biggest stars in your personal “galaxy.”

Look at the big picture…

The Puzzle Item Task: In Greek mythology, Pandora is famous for opening a box and releasing sorrow into the world, leaving only a glimmer of hope behind. But they say “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, and on the whole we think there’s always more hope to be found if you can remember to look at the big picture. Show us evidence of this gestalt in action: Create a “folding surprise” decorated with a reverse-Pandora’s box that, when opened, releases everything in the world that gives you hope. (Don’t bother to include any sorrows in the box. We don’t believe in them.)

To make a folding surprise: Lay out a piece of paper in a portrait orientation. Fold it in half from the top to the bottom. Repeat, and then unfold the paper. You should now have four panels.

Fold the paper so only the top and bottom panels are showing, hiding the middle panels, and draw your first image. Then open up the paper completely and use the two blank middle panels to draw an image connected to the illustration that shows when your folding surprise is closed which demonstrates the curious and surprising perspective of your extraterrestrial civilization!

205(COLLAGE) You are audacious, kind, creative rebels who use your one and precious lives to make an indelible positive mark on the world — but every artist needs a bold vision statement. Spell yours out for the world: write “We create, therefore we live. #GISH” in the world’s most ostentatious amalgamation the world has ever seen in craft supplies, loose materials, or any kind of media or visual expression you choose! We encourage you to post it on social media precisely when the Hunt closes at 10:59pm PT, but that’s not a requirement for your Points.
